Moffat, Robert

Moffat, Robert
Moffat was born in East Lothian, Scotland, where he was apprenticed as a boy to a gardener. He was sponsored by the London Missionary Society, and sent to South Africa in 1817. He eventually settled in Kuruman, which remained his headquarters until 1870. His mission involved establishing African congregations led by African ministers, exploration, the translation of the Bible into Sechwana and the introduction of modern methods of agriculture. Moffat’s achievements were remarkable. By the time he left South Africa, the whole area around Kuruman had been Christianised and his methods were generally recognised to be highly successful. He is also remembered as the father-in-law of David Livingstone.
